Two Cent Pieces

From 1864 to 1873 the Two Cent Piece was minted by the United States Bureau of the Mint. The coin was designed by James B. Longacre and made of a copper nickel alloy.

The Two Cent was the first coin to be inscribed with the motto "In God We Trust". This coin ushered in the use of the motto on all coinage starting in 1938 by a piece of legislation from Congress. The coin has been considered by many to be one of the most expressive coins of the Civil War with it's wreaths, stripes and almost calligraphic presence.

In addition to beauty, these coins are quite rare due to the short length of time that they were minted. These coins were also minted in a yearly decreasing amount as the nickel became more popular and used more.

Due to scarcity and demand, these coins can be hard to find. If you are looking to collect or invest in these coins, you should look for the 1872, which is the last year they were minted, and the 1873 Collectors Proofs.
